    La Serafina de José Mor de Fuentes se presenta generalmente como una novela epistolar “sentimental” o “didáctica”. Al restar el fervoroso subjetivismo del protagonista, su exaltación de la pasión, y su prosa personal y castiza, el estudio se propone examinar algunos rasgos que hasta ahora no se han tomado en consideración y que permiten juzgar la obra de Mor también como composición romántica (o al menos prerromántica), en el panorama de la novelística española de finales del siglo XVIII. José Mor de Fuentes’ La Serafina is generally presented as a “sentimental” or “didactical” epistolary novel. By reducing the fervent subjectivism of the main character, its exaltation of passion and its personal and pure prose, this study aims to examine some features that haven’t been considered yet and that allow to judge Mor’s work also as a romantic composition (or at least pre romantic), in the scenery of the Spanish novel at the end of the 18th century

    Understanding of behavioral factors associated with obesity is of importance in addressing this issue. This study examined the association between cognitive restraint, uncontrolled eating, emotional eating and body mass index (BMI) and amount of food plated, consumed, leftovers, and leftover food thrown into the trash (food wasted) in early adolescent girls nine to 13 years in O'ahu, Hawai'i (n = 93). Food plated, consumed, leftovers, and food wasted were estimated using a three-day mobile food record™ (mFR). Weight and height were measured to compute BMI (kg/m 2). The three-factor eating questionnaire provided a score from 0 to 100 for cognitive restraint, uncontrolled eating, and emotional eating. Higher scores are indicative of greater cognitive restraint, uncontrolled eating, and emotional eating. Pearson's correlations were computed to examine the relationship between three factor eating scores and BMI. General linear models were conducted to examine the effect of each of three-factor eating scores on food plated, consumed, leftovers, and food wasted. Cognitive restraint was positively correlated with BMI (r = 0.36, p < 0.001) and with BMI z-score (r = 0.40, p < 0.001). There were no associations between three-factor eating scores and food plated, consumed, leftovers, and food wasted at lunch. However, at dinner, total energy plated, left over, and food wasted increased by 4.24 kcal/day (p = 0.030), 1.67 kcal/day (p = 0.002), and 0.93 kcal/day (p = 0.031), respectively, with a unit increase in uncontrolled eating score. Similarly, total energy plated and energy left over at dinner increased by 3.40 kcal/day (p = 0.045) and 1.51 kcal/day (p = 0.001), respectively, with a unit increase in emotional eating score. Additional research should examine the specific roles of cognitive restraint, uncontrolled eating, emotional eating and food waste in the development of obesity in adolescents

    Fibre Reinforced Geopolymers as Inorganic Strengthening Composites for Masonry Structures

    The study presents an assessment of externally bonded Fibre-Reinforced GeoPolymers (FRGPs) as strengthening material for masonry structures. Thanks to their tailored chemical and mechanical characteristics, geopolymer matrices can fulfil the restoration criteria for Built Heritage (BH) with the benefit of heat-resistant performances better than those of organic and inorganic matrices used in Externally Bonded Fibre Reinforced Polymers (EB-FRP) and Fabric-Reinforced Cementitious Matrix (FRCM) materials, respectively. This work is built on the outcomes of a previous investigation that proved the suitability of the developed geopolymer matrix for applications on clay bricks, revealing a good adhesion to masonry substrates and to embedded reinforcements. The behaviour of three FRGPs, including either a bi-directional basalt mesh, a bi-directional carbon mesh or a unidirectional Ultra High Strength Steel (UHSS) fabric, was explored by means of local tests on masonry sub-assemblages made of soft-mud clay bricks and hydraulic lime mortar. In overall, 9 single-lap shear tests on single bricks with a bonded length of 200 mm and 9 three-point bending tests on 2-brick slices, connected by a mortar joint and reinforced at the bottom face, were carried out. Lastly, the behaviour in alkaline environments of each reinforcement was investigated through tensile tests on coupons immersed for 28 days in alkaline solutions simulating the conditions of the geopolimeric matrices. Results confirmed the interesting potential of FRGPs for strengthening masonry elements, highlighting a good performance of steel and carbon reinforcements. On the other hand, precautions should be taken with basalt meshes that, as expected, were more sensitive to alkaline environment

    A comparison of electrochemical degradation of phenol on boron doped diamond and lead dioxide anodes

    This work compares two electrode materials used to mineralize phenol contained in waste waters. Two disks covered with either boron doped diamond (BDD) or PbO2 were used as anodes in a one compartment flow cell under the same hydrodynamic conditions. Efficiencies of galvanostatic electrolyses are compared on the basis of measurements of Total Organic Carbon (TOC) and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD). Galvanostatic electrolyses were monitored by analysis of phenol and of its oxidation derivatives to evaluate the operating time needed for complete elimination of toxic aromatics. The experimental current efficiency is close to the theoretical value for the BDD electrode. Other parameters being equal, phenol species disappeared at the same rate using the two electrode materials but the BDD anode showed better efficiency to eliminate TOC and COD. Moreover, during the electrolysis less intermediates are formed with BDD compared to PbO2 whatever the current density. A comparison of energy consumption is given based on the criterion of 99% removal of aromatic compounds

    Electrochemical synthesis of peroxomonophosphate using boron-doped diamond anodes

    A new method for the synthesis of peroxomonophosphate, based on the use of boron-doped diamond electrodes, is described. The amount of oxidant electrogenerated depends on the characteristics of the supporting media (pH and solute concentration) and on the operating conditions (temperature and current density). Results show that the pH, between values of 1 and 5, does not influence either the electrosynthesis of peroxomonophosphate or the chemical stability of the oxidant generated. Conversely, low temperatures are required during the electrosynthesis process to minimize the thermal decomposition of peroxomonophosphate and to guarantee significant oxidant concentration. In addition, a marked influence of both the current density and the initial substrate is observed. This observation can be explained in terms of the contribution of hydroxyl radicals in the oxidation mechanisms that occur on diamond surfaces. In the assays carried out below the water oxidation potential, the generation of hydroxyl radicals did not take place. In these cases, peroxomonophosphate generation occurs through a direct electron transfer and, therefore, at these low current densities lower concentrations are obtained. On the other hand, at higher potentials both direct and hydroxyl radical-mediated mechanisms contribute to the oxidant generation and the process is more efficient. In the same way, the contribution of hydroxyl radicals may also help to explain the significant influence of the substrate concentration. Thus, the coexistence of both phosphate and hydroxyl radicals is required to ensure the generation of significant amounts of peroxomonophosphoric acid

    Characterizing early adolescent food waste using the mobile food record.

    This study aimed to assess the amount of plate waste and how plate waste was disposed by early adolescent girls using a mobile food record (mFR). Participants were girls nine to thirteen years residing in O’ahu, Hawai’i (n = 93). Foods selected and leftover were estimated using a three day mFR. Each leftover food was then classified as thrown into the trash, fed to a pet, eaten later, or other (e.g., composted). Repeated measures analyses of variance (ANOVA) were conducted and Tukey’s post-hoc test were used to adjust for multiple comparisons between times (breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snack) on leftover food and leftover food thrown into the trash. The percentage of food leftover and thrown into the trash was highest at lunch. The percentage of protein, grain, vegetables, fruit, and dairy leftover at lunch were unexpectedly low compared to previous studies. The median for percentage of food thrown into the trash at lunch was <5% for all food groups, and was consistently low across the day (<10%). Average energy intake was 436 kcal (±216) at lunch, and 80% of caregivers reported total household income as ≥$70,000. Studies in real-time using technology over full days may better quantify plate waste among adolescents

    Experimental approach for the study of SOFC cathodes

    The suitability of impedance measurements in Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFCs) is an important concern, especially in case of measuring separately the behaviour of one of the electrode when an overvoltage is applied. In this case a thin electrolyte-supported cell with the RE (Reference Electrode) coplanar with the WE (Working Electrode) is experimentally convenient, but many authors highlighted that incorrect results can be obtained if an inappropriate geometric configuration is used. In this work LSM cathodes ((La0.8Sr0.2)MnO3-x) were investigated in a Yttria-stabilised Zirconia (YSZ) electrolyte-supported cell, using an electrolyte 3 mm thick. Two types of cells were prepared: the first (Cell1) according to the geometric requirements suggested in literature: little WE (diameter 3 mm) aligned to the CE (Counter Electrode) and with equal Rpol(polarisation resistance) and time constant; RE co-planar around the WE and placed at a distance greater than three-electrolyte thicknesses from the WE; the second one (Cell2) equal to Cell1 but with a bigger WE (diameter 8 mm). Impedance measurements were carried out both in two- and three- electrode configuration, at OCV (Open Circuit Voltage) and under applied overpotentials. A preliminary comparison between the results extracted from Cell2 at two- and three- electrodes confirms that a thick electrolyte allows extracting suitable three-electrode impedance results in case of OCV and small overpotentials. On the other side, when an overpotential over 0.2 V is applied, a comparison between Cell1 and Cell2 gives quite different results. The investigation here presented considers also an experimental approach useful for the comprehension of the main phenomena governing the kinetic of the process
